Denise Brown-Sackey Taking Up Principal Post at Newham College

The Network is delighted to extend its congratulations to Denise Brown-Sackey who will take up the position of Principal at Newham College of Further Education next month. Currently Deputy Principal at the college, Denise will take over from current Principal, Martin Tolhurst.

In attaining this high profile role, Denise has become the third BME professional to become principal of a London college; she joins Maxine Room, Principal of Lewisham College and Satnam Gill OBE, longstanding principal of the specialist designated Working Men's College.

Denise commented, "I am delighted to have been appointed as Principal and Chief Executive of Newham College of Further Education. Newham College has a strong purpose and a crucial role within its local community and I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to continue this legacy and to lead this highly successful college.

"I am greatly looking forward to my new role and I am thrilled that having built my career over 20 years at Newham College that I can continue here with the next stage of my career."

Beginning her career in education working as a part time teacher in 1985; Denise’s subsequent progress through the ranks saw her rise to Centre Manager for Haringey Adult Education Service and eventually to Executive Director at Newham College.

After leaving Newham College for two years to take up the position of Vice Principal at Havering College, Denise returned to Newham as Deputy Principal and has remained in this role until her recent promotion.

Denise has taken full advantage of the resources available through membership of the Network and paid tribute to the support she has received. As well as taking part in one of our Black Leadership Initiative work shadowing programmes, Denise has trained as a BLI mentor so she can give something back to her fellow BME colleagues.
