Sujinder Singh Sangha, Principal and Chief Executive of Stockton Riverside College in County Durham has been awarded an OBE in Her Majesty’s New Years 2010 Honours List in recognition of his services to local and national further education.
The Network is delighted to congratulate a long time active member and supporter of the NBP; Sujinder trained as a mentor with the Black Leadership Initiative in 2004 and has served on the Black Leadership Initiative Advisory board as well as the Centre for Excellence in Leadership’s national advisory group and other local, regional and national advisory and executive bodies for further education, the NHS and the BBC.
Throughout the past 40 years, Sujinder has demonstrated continued commitment to the improvement of further education, helping to develop international education links and founding and leading community and cultural events. His previous roles include Deputy Principal at City College Birmingham and Vice Principal at Handsworth College.
Sujinder was surprised and delighted to receive the OBE and paid tribute to the whole team at Stockton Riverside College as well as colleagues throughout the further education system.
He commented, “It came as a complete surprise and I am absolutely delighted. This honour recognises the Further Education services that Stockton Riverside College provides to the Stockton and wider Tees Valley learners, communities and employers. The college is totally committed to learners’ success and progression to employment, business and higher education. We provide further and higher education to learners of all abilities to enable them to realise their potential and move on in their lives. This is a team effort involving staff, managers and governors and this is their achievement.
“This is also a tribute to local and national Further Education which is making a tremendous contribution to the lives of people and the wider development of our society and economy. I feel this is a tribute to the work involved with a large number of professional colleagues, governors, students, employers and communities – this is recognition of their excellent work and without their support, progress would not have been possible.”
An investiture event to be organised by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood will take place at St James’ Palace in London to which those honoured in the list will be invited.
