The Black Leadership Initiative matches participants with experienced senior college managers – including Principals – from other institutions, who act as their mentor. Participants on the mentoring programme will be guided and coached through tailored one-to-one support by mentors who have had specific training enabling them to understand the needs of the BME staff, and the institutional barriers they may encounter, and to act as effective mentors.
The content of the workshop is very practical, providing several opportunities for attendees to practice the fundamental coaching skills that are needed to effectively mentor others. In particular there is an emphasis on understanding the context in which the initiative is set - as a career development initiative - and the range of issues and barriers that mentees may have encountered in their journey to date.
