Intercultural Working Skills

The Diversity in Action series of workshops are underpinned by the National Occupational Standards for Intercultural Working - standards for working with people from different countries or diverse cultures, which have been developed by CILT, the National Centre for Languages.

What is Intercultural Working?

Effective intercultural working is about working with people from different countries or diverse cultures in ways that promote open and respectful interaction, better understanding and improve performance.
Intercultural working skills mean working effectively with clients and/or colleagues from a range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. They are active and participative, and strengthen equality & diversity policies, procedures and actions.

The Workshops

The Diversity in Action series of workshops incorporate elements from the 6 units of the Standards, and each of the five workshops focus on a discrete area of organisational / business function:

  • Working with colleagues from diverse cultures
  • Managing colleagues from diverse cultures
  • Recruiting & retaining colleagues from diverse cultures
  • Delivering services to individuals from diverse cultures
  • Developing new markets & customers – local, national & international

There are significant underpinning personal qualities that have been drawn from organisations and individuals who are well disposed to intercultural working. They are desirable attributes and attitudes which people with different cultural experiences working together may aspire to and grow towards.

Benefits

The benefits for a business or organisation in developing intercultural working skills are to a large degree quite clear although we would like to highlight some of the key areas based on our experience of working with individuals and organisations in the public sector:

  • More productive workforces
  • Improved customer service
  • Mutually respectful and supportive working relations
  • Greater potential for local business growth
  • More effective international trade
  • Strengthened equality & diversity policies, procedures and actions
  • Greater engagement with local Communities

Audience

The workshops are suitable for anybody who is working with individuals or organisations from another culture or country whether they were born, educated or live here, or live or work abroad. They may be:

  • Carrying out any work activity in the private or public sector, in education, or in voluntary, community, aid or humanitarian work.
  • Working in any business relationship such as a manager, colleague, client, partner, sub-contractor, and particularly suitable for individuals providing public sector business services such as teachers, police officers, local authority workers, etc.
  • Working with people for ongoing or one-off transactions inside or outside their organisation, face to face or using telephone, letter, email, or other communication channels.
